Hi Asddio A,
Exfoliation is exactly that...the mechanical or chemical removal of the epidermis, the outermost layer of the oldest, spent, dry (dead) skin cells.
New skin cells are generated in the skins lowest layer - the dermis. Then they slowly move upwards to the outer surface or epidermis. This process takes roughly one month.
The skin cells become keratinized as they move to the epidermal surface and die, becoming more acidic and saturated with keratin (a protective protein), further protecting your skin against the elements.
The dead skin cells eventually just fall off, becoming part of those little dust kittens underneath your computer desk. A rather hefty percentage of dust is actually dead skin cells!
Mechanical exfoliation involves scrubbing the skin with a mild abrasive to remove dead skin and expose that pretty new layer of skin below.
Chemical exfoliation usually incorporates the use of a mild acid to remove dead skin and expose that pretty new layer of skin below.
Wine treatments are all the rave now, since certain wines contain tartaric acid.
Hope this helped.
-Jeeem-So what is the science behind exfoliation ?
Exfoliation is simply abrasion that removes dead skin cells from the body. There's no science, per se, behind it. Rubbing the skin with a loufa sponge or washing with an exfoliant containing rough particles will remove the dead cells. By removing them the fresh cells appear giving a somewhat, but not dramatically, fresher look to the skin. Any product applied to the skin after exfoliation is absorbed to a greater extent. For example, if you want to apply a self tanning lotion to your legs, face, whatever, the results will be smoother with less streaking if you exfoliate before applying the product. Skin cells ';turnover'; at a rapid rate, and exfoliation occurs naturally (check the insides of a pair of black socks in the winter; the white stuff is dead skin). Commercial exfoliants just accelerate the process.
Okay exfoliation is vary Heath for the skin, i would say to do it 3 times a week. it cleans off all the old dead skin cells witch make you stay looking younger. it also rushes blood to the face to make you stay younger because when new blood is pushed thew the face it renews the skin easier. it also cleans deep into your pours to make them feel and look smaller. exfoliating is a vary healthy tip and everyone should do it.
The skin you see all over your body is actually dead cells, pushed to the surface by the quickly-growing layer of living cells underneath.
Exfoliating speeds the process of the dead cells falling off, revealing a newer, softer layer of skin.
